Syria, Jordan Strike Landmark Deals to Expand Cooperation
The accords emerged from the second session of the Syrian-Jordanian Higher Coordination Council, convened in the Jordanian capital Amman and co-chaired by senior officials from both governments.
Among the most immediate outcomes, both sides agreed to resume natural gas supplies to Syria under a deal originally signed on January 26, with deliveries expected to restart within two days of completing the necessary technical procedures, according to Syria's foreign authorities.
On the economic front, officials committed to strengthening trade and investment ties, with new trade facilitation measures set to take effect May 1 on a reciprocal basis. Both governments also stressed the urgency of restoring transit trade flows and improving port access to ease the cross-border movement of goods.
In the transport sector, Damascus and Amman reaffirmed joint commitments to bolstering land, air, and maritime connectivity, while pledging to streamline procedures and inject greater flexibility into cross-border operations.
Water security featured prominently in the talks, with both sides agreeing to reactivate joint technical committees to oversee equitable water distribution and tackle shared vulnerabilities, including recurring seasonal shortages and the long-term challenge of sustainable resource management.
The two countries also outlined ambitions to broaden collaboration across education, healthcare, agriculture, tourism, and institutional development, alongside capacity-building initiatives designed to sharpen public sector performance on both sides of the border.
